Mikan Watch #27: This Ugly and Beautiful World
From episode 7 – the beach episode – comes this rather unusual and distinctive design.
And just for those sick and twisted and so very, very wrong individuals who get off on such things…
A couple of Ringo boxes.
So, yeah, not exactly the greatest show ever. That said, I don’t really get the hate it seems to generate from some parts of fandom – at worst, it doesn’t really seem anything deserving worse (or particularly better, to be honest) than extreme indifference. They could really have done with knock-off Devilman action, as it makes it really hard to care about it when it becomes important when it’s spread so thin across the rest of the series.
They could also have done with having a far more aggressively, well, Gainax ending – Hikari totally should have destroyed the world, and everybody would totally blame Mari. It’d be, like, “Dammit, Mari, I told you it was a bad idea to want to be porked by your cousin!”. That would have been neat.
And, just for the hell of it, my standee of Hikari in her swimsuit from episode 7, which was a pack-in with the 50th issue of Megami. No, I don’t normally have it on display – I had to dig the thing out of the cupboard. Honest.

I remember watching this back in 2004 when I was first getting into anime. Damn, has it really been 5 years now? Don’t really get the hate myself–is Gainax not allowed to make a fun/dumb fanservice show with a relatively ordinary ending?

I pretty much did meet it with EXTREME indifference. I was actually so bored by this show I managed to fall asleep during the second to last episode. The boobs were nice, though.
