Mikan Watch #3: Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo
In the science classroom where Makoto finds the “Time Walnut”. I’m sure I saw another Mikan box in another show in the last week, but I’ve completely forgotten exactly what ^^;
It kind of pains me that I don’t really have something which isn’t dumb to say about such a wonderful movie, but others have already put things far more eloquently than I could ever be bothered to.
I was watching the movie via the recent Korean R3 DVD release. It’s a pretty nice set, spread across three disks. Of course, if you want to watch anything other than the movie you’ll have to go for Korean subtitles or raw, but at least the movie itself had English subtitles. Actually, the third disk is just the movie again playing with storyboards visible. I’ve not bothered looking at the second disk.
The packaging is nice given how cheap the set is. The box has transparent blue slipcase in which Makoko has been silhouetted out in white. Removing the slip case reveals one side to show Makoto standing at the train crossing which features prominently in the movie, and the other side has that iconic shot of Makoto leaping.
The digipack cases for the three disks each have a wraparound of three of the significant background locations featured in the movie. Lovely. There’s also a booklet with background art, sketches, and staff interviews and the like. The staff interviews and all that are, obviously, printed in Korean rather than Japanese, though.
Oh, there was also a clipping of 32mm film from a print of the movie. Pretty random extra, really. Mine has Makoko with a baseball bat slung over her shoulder, from around 27 minutes into the film methinks.

Still waiting for my copy. I’ll see if the clipping is really a random extra once it finally comes in. How many pages is the booklet? I was thinking about the Taiwan version, which advertised about having a 96 page booklet. So i’m wondering if it’s actually the same one. Other than that, the Taiwanese release is essentially the same as the Korean but the higher price tag and lack of Eng. subs wasn’t worth it to me (i can read eng subs much more faster than chn. subs). The HK release is bare bones, otherwise I would’ve gotten that.

The booklet from the Korean version is 76 pages.
